A Torque Converter is a fluid coupling, designed to be used in the automatic transmission system that allows the engine to continue running while the vehicle is at a standstill or during gear changes. It consists of the impeller, turbine, and stator that are housed within a sealed unit filled with transmission fluid. The lockup clutch in a torque converter provides a direct mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission. Attributes: • Provided with lockup clutch to eliminate the slippage that occurs in the torque converter and reduces heat generation • Helps to transmit and multiply torque from the engine to the transmission Applications: A Torque Converter is used to efficiently transfer power from the Engine to the Transmission at high speeds, and provide smooth operation at low speeds, and during gear changes.
