The Camshaft is a rotating shaft with lobes or raised cams, that force the intake and exhaust valves open as it rotates. The camshaft is located in the engine block and is driven by the crankshaft. The crankshaft rotates at a much faster speed than the camshaft, so a timing belt or chain is used to transfer the motion from the crankshaft to the camshaft.
