A helical gear is a type of gear in which the teeth are cut at an angle to the axis of rotation. A helix or spiral shape is produced over the length of the gear by the angle of the teeth, which is normally between 15 and 30 degrees. A helical gear's teeth are also curved rather than straight, allowing for a more progressive contact between the gears as they mesh, resulting in quieter operation and smoother functioning.
