A Backup Ring is a sealing component that is used in conjunction with an O-ring to prevent extrusion under high pressure and temperature conditions. It is made of a harder material than the O-ring, such as plastic, and is placed on the opposite side of the O-ring from the pressure source for secure sealing. It provides mechanical support and prevents it from being forced into clearances or gaps when the system is pressurized.
